Can you feel the springs through the mattress?
Is the mattress more than 10 years old?
If your answer to any of the above is yes, consider purchasing a new mattress. Given that it is estimated that we spend more than a third of our lives in bed, it is important to spend time on choosing the right mattress. Plan to go when you have time and when the shops are not busy. This way you can lie on the mattress for a while to get the feel of the mattress before choosing.
As a chiropractor in West Hampstead, I am often asked about choosing the right mattress and here are a few recommendations that may help you.
Should I choose a hard or soft mattress?
The best mattress is a supportive one for your body. When you lie on it your spine should be parallel to the mattress. If you find your spine is sagging then the mattress is too soft. If your spine is bowing then the mattress is too hard. Your pillow should also be an extension of this, allowing your neck to be in line with your spine. You can ask someone to check this for you, when you are lying on the mattress.
What about my partner?
Always shop for the mattress together to ensure that the mattress you choose is right for both of you. Different weights and body shapes, require different levels of mattress tension.
If you find that you and your partner need different tension for your respective side of the mattress, you can select from a range that allows two single mattresses to be zipped together, or in the case of made to order mattresses for the two halves of the mattress to have different levels of firmness, so that you both get the level of support you need.
If you have recently replaced your mattress and pillow, but you are still experiencing back pain, neck pain or shoulder pain, feel free to contact our chiropractor at West Hampstead Chiropractic Clinic, to see if we can help you.
